Discover Kyoto's artistic legacy through hands-on Hyogu workshops.

Hyogu artisans in Kyoto are revered for their expertise in conserving and mounting traditional Japanese artworks such as scrolls and screens, a craft intertwined with the region's cultural and aesthetic heritage.

The urauchi technique, fundamental to hyogu, entails meticulous glue application to Japanese paper, ensuring the preservation of artworks through precise backing methods. This process, crucial for longevity, involves careful selection and concentration of glues and the delicate joining of materials, adapted to Kyoto's humid climate.

Visitors to Hyogu workshops gain rare insights into these unique practices, immersing themselves in Kyoto's artistic traditions. In hands-on sessions, participants craft coasters (as shown above in the picture in the middle) using hikibaku metallic threads under expert guidance, fostering a deeper appreciation for Japanese craftsmanship.

These workshops not only let visitors experience traditional artistry firsthand but also allow them to create personalized mementos of Kyoto's cultural heritage.
